If you are thinking of studying Italian and you don’t feel motivated enough to do so, and you need specific goals, in this video I will give you 5 good reasons why studying Italian will become more interesting.
In addition, I will ask you some questions that will help you set specific goals just for you.
Why do we choose to study a language?
There doesn’t have to be a practical reason for doing so.
Sometimes a language may attract us because of its sound or because we are fascinated by the country where this language is spoken. This is one of the main reasons why my students study Italian.
1 – Travelling to Italy
One of the main reasons why people study Italian is to travel to Italy.
Indeed, Italy is world-famous for its culture, art and landscapes and, of course, for its food.
I’m sure you too have made at least one trip to Italy, or are thinking of doing so.
You could ask yourself, then:
What could I do in Italy if I knew Italian?
Can knowing Italian also help the people travelling with me? In what way?
How could knowing Italian enrich my trip and my experiences?
2 – Having international friends
There are more and more Italians in the world and perhaps you have met some in your own country as well.
I believe that having international friends is one of the most enriching things that exist. Exchanging different opinions, habits and worldviews can help us open our minds and become more tolerant and empathetic.
Have you ever wondered:
What could I learn from a person whose culture is different from mine?
How can getting to know a new culture open my mind to different perspectives?
3 – Get to know a new, world-famous culture or discover your culture of origin
Italy, we know, is world famous for its art. 70% of the world’s art, in fact, is found in Italy.
This is really an incredible figure that justifies the fact that our country is so famous in the rest of the world.
Moreover, many people in the world have Italian origins. So, why not discover your own origin through the language?
So, ask yourself:
What can I discover about the Italian culture if I know this language?
Can knowing Italian bring me closer to the Italian culture?
4 – For study or work
There are certainly people who also study Italian for study and work.
I have had and still have students motivated by this reason and they are mostly people working in the art world.
If you are among them, ask yourself:
How can I grow in my work if I know Italian?
What role could I fill? What could I do?
How much more information could I know that I do not know today?
5 – A way out of your comfort zone/a challenge
Finally, studying any language, not just Italian, is a way of getting out of our comfort zone.
It is a challenge, which in my opinion can also be very good for our self-esteem.
Sometimes it can be scary to start, or we can be overwhelmed by laziness.
But have you ever wondered:
Learning a language seems impossible to me, but what would happen if I succeeded? How would I feel speaking this language?
How would finding the courage to speak Italian spur me on to express myself in general?
If I gain courage and step out of my linguistic comfort zone, will I be able to do so in other areas of my life?
